Optimising the Carbonatation Process
نویسندگان
چکیده
Refinery carbonatation is widely practised in South Africa and about 80% of the refined sugar produced in South Africa is clarified/decolourised using this method. Attempts have therefore been made to optimise the carbonatation process with regard to impurity removal. Some of the main factors that have been investigated to improve the decolourisation and filterability of the carbonated liquor are: • Lime quality. • Method of lime addition. • Effect of saturator configuration. • Addition of cationic polymers. • Addition of hydrogen peroxide. • Addition of ozone. The results from both pilot plant and full-scale tests are discussed.

Optimisation of wire-cut EDM process parameter by Grey-based response surface methodology
Wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) is one of the advanced machining processes. Response surface methodology coupled with Grey relation analysis method has been proposed and used to optimise the machining parameters of WEDM. A face centred cubic design is used for conducting experiments on high speed steel (HSS) M2 grade workpiece material. The regression model of significant factors such ...
متن کاملCOMPARISON OF CARBONATATION AND PHOSPHATATION PROCESS FOR CLARIFICATION OF SUGAR SOLUTIONS. A technical review to assist decision making over the appropriate Clarification
In recent years, it has been necessary for sugar factories to produce higher quality raw sugar for export and good quality refined or semi-refined white sugar for direct consumption. Consequently, clarification and decolorization processes used in sugar factories have had to be improved. It is now almost universal for sugar refineries to use either Carbonatation or Phosphatation Process to clar...
متن کاملIon Exclusion Desugarisation
Ion exclusion is a chromatographic process which separates components from an impure feedstock on the basis of molecular size and charge. A pilot plant ion exclusion separator was constructed to determine the technical and economic feasibility of recovering sugar from refinery jet 4 (the feedstock identified as most promising in terms of ease of treatment). Extensive tests on jet 4 from the Mal...
متن کاملMethods for Better Assessment of Fatigue and Deterioration in Bridges and Other Steel or Concrete Constructions
Large metal and concrete structures suffer by various kinds of deterioration, and accurate prediction of the remaining life is important. This paper informs about two methods for its assessment. One method, suitable for steel bridges and other constructions exposed to fatigue, monitors the loads and damage accumulation using information systems for the operation and the finite element model of ...
متن کاملAsh Gain Due to Lactic Acid Formation during Carbonatation
Hulett Refinery had been experiencing problems with higher than normal ash gains since the 1987/88 season. Investigations into the composition .ofthe as~ sho,,:ed the major cause of the ash gam to be an mcr~~se in calcium. It ~as proposed that the calcium was solubl1~sed by reaction WIth lactic acid to form calcium lactate WhICh was not removed during carbonatation. This proposal was later.c~)O...
